How to Build Reddit Authority: 5 Steps for Better Google Rankings

Build Reddit Authority

So much discussion has centered on the best ways to use Reddit, the role it plays in marketing and in professional/creator worlds, how to get buy-in from superiors, and how it fits with organic, direct outreach, affiliate, and professional/creator-related marketing.

Unlike most social platforms built primarily around questions, statements, experiences, and opinions, it is constructed upon these same criteria. Consumers want an honest opinion prior to deciding on a solution, service, or product that they are buying, and on many other websites customers aren't likely to admit to a lack of knowledge.

For an SEO professional, Reddit provides some highly targeted content sharing, brand building, referral, and keyword value with an engaged consumer that's likely going to buy what they're talking about!

But Reddit isn't a "post links and make SEO” platform; it takes work. Here's how a professional SEO should utilize it while creating relevance and helping improve site ranking:

1. Find and Focus on Relevant Subreddits

There are millions of communities on Reddit, thousands in niche industries alone. The first aspect of building authority in SEO-driven forums, Reddit included, is to find where customers have genuine intent/discussion around your business or products. Rather than broad category searches of your niche, identify what users with specific wants/needs/industry needs are looking for.

Take the example of a digital marketer: SEO, content marketing, advertising, and even small business and specific verticals would be logical subreddits.

A software company might target subreddits based on product type (like productivity tools and design software) and industry-specific forums such as coding subreddits. After identifying them, don't necessarily bombard everyone with new membership posts. Lurk and gain an understanding of subreddit dynamics. Understand its particular rules and subculture, then jump into relevant conversations where appropriate.

2. Gain Karma: Help First, Promote Second

An account can be marked as spam if it only promotes services, brands, or websites within its discussion thread. Users in any forum can determine when someone is just an advertiser vs. an authority who is actually adding value.

When joining a forum, whether new to the brand or not, provide true assistance—share relevant experiences and insight instead of directing someone to an article by a general 'more info' link.

The purpose isn't to just get hits to your website (the meta purpose of linking to it); it's to establish yourself as a user whom the community knows, respects, and can go to for genuine advice. You'll find the most successful accounts in forums are people who provide genuine information first, before they mention themselves (which then often involves them receiving requests to link back to the expert).

3. Create Valuable Content the Community Wants

Much like any effective content strategy for any platform, content needs to serve user intent. Reddit users want real-time practical advice and industry experiences above branded articles or fluff. Before contributing, ask yourself if the information is valuable enough that someone would spend time reading it or commenting.

Topics like case studies, step-by-step analyses, in-depth answers, and mistake-based learning often perform well.

Try to focus on answering specific user-based pain points, instead of generic explanations of your industry. For instance, a piece titled "Is PPC worth it?" is likely to be glossed over, whereas a piece titled "My company is losing impressions but getting clicks on ads: Here's what we did" offers real user problems that a business needs answers to, resulting in better sharing, community input, and ultimately, improving search visibility. Always tweak posts for specific subreddits when sharing across many, as different subreddits have varying sharing across many, as differing subreddits have differing audience expectations.

4. Link Strategically and Appropriately

Many link-building strategies are flawed in that they focus too much on placing links directly in posts as if that adds value itself. Linking from Reddit should complement what people have discussed or asked—not form the foundation for a post. Ensure content provides helpful advice without always dropping a direct hyperlink to your site, and only send customers to the information on your website if it's an appropriate response to an individual’s need. Although linking is an opportunity, many benefits (brand awareness, referral traffic, general buzz) are accrued if you're adding to discussion rather than directly requesting reads, not links, that have value.

5. Be Consistent and Build a Recognizable Presence

Gaining authority takes time and consistent effort. Constant engagement in relevant communities is paramount and leads to visibility. Commit time to becoming a known, respected presence in your chosen subreddits, sharing valuable expertise and assistance as your strategy takes root.

Pay attention to which discussions get traction, but not in a spammy way—observe where your expertise can be most effective at building trust and community connections, informing future strategies and content planning at your website for higher organic ranking.

By establishing yourself through genuine engagement, you'll build your website with a stronger link structure by virtue of you being seen by users who ask directly, "What is the best service/resource for [customer problem]? I really trust X," and your profile may be listed as a relevant resource if someone thinks positively of you from a community interaction.

It is IMPORTANT to understand that this isn't an automated approach to increasing Google rankings; it is only a supplement to and supporter of a complete SEO strategy that is already yielding relevant, high-quality information and an experience optimized for a user. Factors such as quality, website relevance, optimization efforts on the website, and complexity of search term competition influence search engine ranking and so on.

Avoid These Typical Reddit SEO Mistakes

  • An account formed exclusively to advertise or post links is instantly viewed as spam.
  • Repeatedly using the same copy across many subreddits may result in posts being removed and potentially having account actions applied to you in the community.
  • Fake interactions and misleading claims or posts are frowned upon and can seriously degrade reputation and trust within the community and possibly cause punitive measures toward your account.
  • Making irrelevant comments may be the best example to avoid all things promotional in your posting on Reddit. Always make sure what you have added contributes to the conversations.

Use Reddit to Improve Your Content

One key benefit, beyond community engagement itself, lies in receiving customer feedback/research directly. Customer complaints, pain points, queries, and product comparisons are visible right there! Use data like "I can't get X organic search for keyword Y with no advertising budget" and write an article on your website that answers questions concerning ways to fix your site and thus enhance search results by filling in informational gaps with users of a specific category online—bridging the gap between social media and content marketing and SEO.
